One of the biggest challenges facing the beef industry today is consistency in the quality of our final product. As the consumer becomes more sophisticated and informed so will the demand increase for a quality product that “guarantees” a pleasant eating experience every time.
The GeneSTAR vision is to provide the beef industry with leading edge DNA-based gene marker technology in a practical form and at a reasonable price. The perfect steak every time is closer to becoming a reality with the latest scientific breakthrough in DNA tests for beef Marbling, Tenderness and Feed Efficiency.
The Namibian Brahman Breeders Society actively encourages its members to make use of this technology and have at least their herd sires tested. We envision a future where every registered Brahman bull sold in Namibia will be tested and as a step in this direction the society plans on making GeneSTAR testing a prerequisite for offering a bull at the National Sale.
Previously the 12-marker GeneSTAR test was used where the results were reported as a star result for each marker. (See download: 12-Marker test explanation) This has been replaced with the new, cutting edge, GeneSTAR MVP (Molecular Value Prediction) test that incorporates an expanded 56 marker panel for the above mentioned traits. The NBBS encourages its members to make use of the MVP test as it makes use of a much broader set of genetic markers and it also allows an individual animal to be compared to the breed average.

Performance Testing Awards 2013 - The WINNERS!
The Namibian Brahman Breeders` Association has developed an award system (together with Peter Massmann and the South African Brahman Breeders` Association) to acknowledge breeders who submit extensive data to the BREEDPLAN performance testing evaluation. The more data a breeder submits, the higher the award he will receive. There are minimum thresholds for qualifing for the different awards. Awards are qualified for in the following ascending order: Silver, Gold, Platinum & Diamand. For more information on the awards and the criteria, please see Breed Improvement - Performance Testing Awards.
For 2013 a total of 7 Silver, 2 Gold, 2 Platinum and 2 Diamand awards were awarded. This evaluation was made by Jacque Els of the Namibian Stud Breeders` Association (NSBA).
